Profile
Hanchen Zhang is a research-based designer and artist based in the Netherlands. His practice investigates infrastructure as a material, logistical, computational, and territorial arrangement through which energy, data, and value circulate across natural and built environments. Working across moving image, sound, objects, sensing devices, and spatial installation, he examines how technological systems and extended supply chains shape socioecological relations, political access, and forms of dependency.
Combining field research, technical experimentation, and sensorial composition, Hanchen constructs layered encounters with computation, territory, public memory, and environmental instability. Polyphony, in his works, refers to the coexistence of theory, fiction, field recording, and poetic narration, allowing these registers to amplify or offset one another. Images, sounds, and data become forms of evidence, atmosphere, and inscription, shifting between technical traces, digital residues, and architectural artefacts.
